Answering All of Your Questions About Dental Veneers
You’ve heard it said that money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you a beautiful smile! Dental veneers can be a perfect solution to achieving straight, pearly white, even teeth. But they come with a cost, so it’s important to do your research so that you know you are getting the best results for your investment. At C R Dental Group, in Dallas, Texas, Dr. James Reisman, voted one of the Best Dentists in Dallas several times over, and Dr. Jordana Contrucci have many years of experience helping patients perfect their smile. They are happy to share the following insights to determine if veneers are right for you.
What are veneers, exactly?
Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain applied to the tooth (similar to adding a fake nail to your own). They are customized based on the patient’s goal. After preparing the subject teeth in the dental office, they are sent to the lab for fabrication. The patient typically wears them temporarily to ‘test drive’ the look, making sure they are happy with the shape, color and aesthetics before bonding them permanently.
What makes a good candidate?
A thorough examination and consultation will determine what the current situation is and what is the patient’s desired outcome. Sometimes orthodontia is what is necessary to produce the results. Other times, due to the condition of the teeth, full crowns may be best utilized. Still other times it may take a combination of treatment to achieve the goals.
How long do veneers last?
Of course there are no guarantees, but when prepared and placed properly, they can last ten to 15 years. But it also takes responsibility by the patient to care for them with diligent home care. If there is anything that can break your own tooth, it can break a veneer too. It’s strongly advised to wear a nightguard to protect them from clenching, grinding, etc. It’s like adding a layer of insurance to your investment.
Noteworthy
It is a good idea to have your teeth professionally cleaned by your hygienist prior to treatment. In many cases the patient may choose to whiten, or bleach, their teeth to get them as light as they like before deciding on a permanent color shade for the veneers.
